For information on how DMU's response to COVID-19 may affect your studies, please visit our dedicated advice page.

The Wellbeing Team offers counselling which can give you the opportunity to talk in confidence with someone who is impartial and separate from work, social and family life.

We do not aim to solve your problems for you; our aim is to help you find and activate your own resources to resolve your difficulties.

Counselling may enable you to make some changes in your life. It can also help you to come to terms with what you can't, or don't want to change. The majority of students attending counselling say that it has helped them get back on track with their studies. Many students also say that it has been an important factor in helping them to stay on their course.

To access support please email wellbeing@dmu.ac.uk or book a Single Point of Access (SPA) appointment via MyGateway.

COVID-19 service information

The Wellbeing Service is unable to offer face-to-face Counselling sessions at this time. This will change for the beginning of the academic year. This is because we want to ensure students and staff are not exposed to unnecessary risk and so are following Government social distancing guidelines. Since it is unclear for how long social distancing measures will be in place, we do not know when we will be able to return to offering face-to-face sessions.

For now, we can offer you two focused sessions of counselling support with a member of our counselling team by phone.

These sessions are a chance to talk through what you are dealing with and explore possible solutions or changes you could make that might help you feel better.

Our hope is that working in this more focused way means we can offer you support in a safe and reliable way, as soon as possible.

Your responsibility

If you have any access needs please let us know when you apply. When you cannot attend an appointment please cancel and give us at least 24 hours’ notice. We can then offer an appointment to another student who needs it. If you miss an appointment you need to contact the service within 48 hours. If you don’t we will assume that you no longer require counselling. However you can request counselling again in the future. Once your counselling has ended we will ask you to complete an evaluation survey. Your feedback is important to us.

Service eligibility

We usually offer from one to six appointments and 1/2 episodes of counselling during your time at university.  Anything more than this is at the professional discretion of the wellbeing team/team leader. Appointments are offered at the same time each week if possible. This can be discussed with your counsellor. The Wellbeing team are committed to working in partnership with students. By applying to the service you are signing up to abide by the professional judgement of the counsellors. This may sometimes mean that it is not deemed appropriate to provide you with a service. If another service is more appropriate to your needs you will be signposted to alternative provision.
