Contactless donation point for Leicester's Winter Night Shelter returns to DMU campus

A contactless Giving Point is available at the front of the DSU Supplies Shop from now until March so students and staff can donate £3 to Leicester's Winter Night Shelter campaign.

DMU is supporting Give Leicester, which aims to use technology and innovation to help improve the lives of some of the city's most vulnerable people.

Give Leicester enables members of the public to donate and be completely confident about where the money will go, and that it will make a difference in helping provide beds for rough sleepers. It is also a way for businesses and individuals to show that they care about homeless people in the city.

The project is organised and funded by BID Leicester and Leicester City Council in partnership with Leicester Homelessness Charter.

How to use the Giving Point

To support the project, a Giving Point has been installed in the window of the Students’ Union Shop, which includes an outward-facing contactless donation terminal. 

With a simple tap of a contactless card on the outside of the window, the box can take £3 donations, so staff and students can give as they walk past the supplies shop on Mill Lane.

What charity does the money go to?

From October 2020 to March 2021 the campaign will raise money for One Roof Leicester, a local charity which has a network of rooms and homes across the city where rough sleepers can be referred and can have their own secure space for the winter. Once moved in, they will continue to receive support from key workers and volunteers to ensure they have everything they need, such as food and help accessing longer-term services.

Does all of the donation go to charity?

All transaction fees are covered by BID Leicester and Leicester City Council, meaning that 100% of donated money will be given to One Roof Leicester.

What else can I do to help if I am worried about someone on the streets?

As well as the donation points across the city, the Give Leicester website hosts an extensive online directory of services available in the city to help people who are homeless.
