Hussain Manawer at DMU on World Mental Health Day 2019


DMU is excited to welcome acclaimed British spoken word poet, writer and charity fundraiser Hussain Manawer to our campus for a student event on Thursday 10 October. You can join us for his special performance and Q&A in the Campus Centre as we mark the annual World Mental Health Day.

Hussain is a significant public voice on issues of mental health and in 2017, set the Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Mental Health Lesson in partnership with Kings College London and Hackney Empire. He recently performed at Soccer Aid, has supported artists such as Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding and shared global stages with leaders including HRH Meghan Markle, Justin Trudeau and the late Kofi Annan.

Manawer has first-hand experience of battling mental health having dealt with grief after losing his mother and also overcoming severe depression, in part through his poetry and creative outlets. He is visiting us to mark World Mental Health Day to offer some insight on how he looks after looks after his mental wellbeing.

What’s the event schedule and how can I sign up?

 

The full itinerary for this special event can be found below:

 

  • 11-11.45am – Performance and Q&A – Campus Centre, Function Room 1
  • 12-12.50pm – Student workshop, The Breathing Space, Portland Building (limited spaces available on a first come, first serve basis)

 

The workshop will allow students to spend an hour working collaboratively with Hussain to develop skills that they can apply to their studies, and future career to achieve their full potential.

The #HealthyDMU Hub has also been refreshed for the new academic year with lots of new information about how to look after your health and wellbeing while at university.

 

There are eight sections on the hub all highlighting wellbeing tip from how to stay active at DMU to top tips on managing your money.

 

From Monday 14 October there will be #HealthyDMU masterclasses running weekly in the Breathing Space, see below for a list of upcoming events.
