On Saturday 20 July The DMU Chamber Choir performed as guest choir for the Evensong service at Worcester Cathedral. Among the hundreds in attendance were the Mayor, Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Worcester, to bid farewell to the Bishop of Dudley.
On invitation from the Dean of Worcester, this was the first of three services at the cathedral sung by DMU Chamber Choir over the weekend.
With over 1000 years of choral tradition, including the prestigious Three Choirs Festival, and home to English composer Edward Elgar, Worcester and its Cathedral have a rich musical heritage.
Musical Director Willard Welsford said: ‘We were privileged to be asked to provide the music for the final valedictory service of the Bishop of Dudley and then the Choral Eucharist and Choral Evensong on the Sunday’
He described how choosing the right music was important for both the occasion and for the choir. He said: ‘We worked up music that largely we had sung before - so the choir can enjoy singing in the song school and then in the Cathedral itself. It is an amazing space to sing in and gives singers a great sense of pride. The choir achieved a really very moving performance.’
The weekend residency marks the end of a hugely successful year for the choir, having performed at Peterborough Cathedral, regular performances in and around Leicester, and at each DMU Graduation ceremony. They look forward to another year of singing, starting with Evensong at Leicester Cathedral on Saturday 14 September.
