Staying safe in the cold weather

Given the icy conditions on some roads and pathways, and forecasts of snow in some areas this week, we’d like to offer guidance for staff and students on staying safe in the cold weather.

Staying safe around campus and other areas

Our Estates team works across campus to make the local area safe for staff and students. However, public roads and footpaths remain the responsibility of the local council and may present a greater hazard.

Areas such as Bede Park and Castle View can be particularly slippery, so please take suitable precautions when moving around and travelling to campus. These include:

  • When driving or cycling – carry out some winter checks, reduce your speed, allow space to brake and manoeuvre gradually
  • When walking – take your time, wear sensible clothing and footwear, try to keep to gritted areas

Also keep an eye on weather reports, such as the Weather Warnings page of the Met Office website.
