Self Guided Employability Mentoring

What is Self Guided Employability Mentoring?

Self-Guided Employability Mentoring differs from the core Employability Mentoring scheme at DMU in that it is self administered by the student and focuses on the student as the person who sets up their own mentoring experience. It offers a more ‘hands off’ approach from the scheme staff and puts the onus directly on the student to make it work for themselves using guidance offered to do just that.

Why do we offer Self Guided Employability Mentoring?

The offer provides an alternative form of mentoring for students, which will empower the student to create their own Employability Mentoring experience. The downloadable guide is for students who feel they do not need the support of the scheme staff to find a mentor, and provides the information and tools to set up their own experience. This self-guided approach encourages students to develop their own good practice in mentoring whilst thinking carefully about own employability, and empowers them to advance their own professional development at a pace tailored to their wants and needs.

What are the benefits of Self Guided Employability Mentoring?

There are a number of benefits to Self Guided Employability Mentoring. This offer provides those with a greater level of courage and drive, the opportunity to design their own mentoring experience. It helps those students create, develop and embrace a culture of networking for their future by drawing from other professionals experience and wisdom. In doing so it provides:

  • An offer that is accessible any time for students not just seasonal (which the core scheme offers)
  • Active encouragement of students to take initiative making Employability Mentoring work for them
  • Empowerment to students who wish to tailor their experience to themselves and not be limited by the current range and depth of mentors currently active on the core scheme
