Industry Innovation Forum for Interdisciplinary Collaboration

The aim of De Montfort University's (DMU's) Industry Innovation Forums is to apply a unique combination of research, knowledge and skills to business needs, converting knowledge into business growth.

Each Forum is a unique combination of industry and university innovators working together, developing innovative solutions around thematic areas such as textiles, energy and sustainability and the challenges of our ageing population. DMU academics provide the research, knowledge and skills which meet business needs and lead to business solutions, new products, or enhanced services.

Multidisciplinary research is recognised as having increasing importance by businesses and  funders alike while the support for ‘smart specialisation’ underpins both the UK government’s own strategy for economic growth, and its application of European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) money through Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and the Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) for business and economic regeneration.

The majority of business problems are not one dimensional and require a mix of research disciplines, while it is clusters of businesses which define the local ‘smart specialisation’, hence the creation of our Industry Innovation Forums to link the world of industry sectors and academia.

We are committed to investing in relationships with businesses to ensure the best possible engagement and impact of our research, and recent business focused events have identified specific multidisciplinary development opportunities.

DMU’s Industry Innovation Forums will build on our high-points of research excellence and our links with business and industry to drive forward knowledge exchange and collaboration and underpin the development of long-term relationships.

Sue Tilley, Economic Strategy Manager at the LLEP, said: "Leicestershire's textile scene is seeing a huge renaissance. It's incredibly exciting." Read more here.

Textile Research Industry Innovation Forum for Interdisciplinary Collaboration (TRIIFIC!) has drawn together representatives from industry, DMU researchers and funders, and continues to develop collaborations to capitalise on the resurgence of interest in this Leicester and Leicestershire specialisation.

Working outwards from a textiles focus, the forum can explore opportunities in market sectors that are receiving increasing attention, focusing on DMU's strengths in Textiles Engineering and Materials (TEAM), Healthcare Textiles, Design and Ethical Trading

Businesses can benefit from access to the unique combination of multi-disciplinary expertise and the exchange of knowledge with other industry professionals who make up the Forum.

Our new Textile Tuesdays events will begin in 2017 held at the DMU office at the prestigious Friars Mill development in Leicester City centre. They will provide an opportunity to network and discuss the latest market developments, research, innovations, technology, and trends in the textiles industry and supply chain.
