Final-year undergraduate students at De Montfort University (DMU) have begun picking up £100 cheques to help towards the costs of securing employment.
The new Employability Award is being given to final-year undergraduate students over the next few weeks as part of the university’s ongoing #loveDMU campaign. Under the initiative, the university is implementing a range of improvements in response to students’ own requests.
Final-year Criminology student, Lucy McCree-Falconer, picked up her cheque today and said: “This extra money will make a massive difference to me. I am going to put it towards buying smart clothes for when I apply for jobs within the criminal justice system.
“I think DMU definitely listen, the changes that have been made, such as the library now being open 24/7, makes a massive difference to student life.”
Final-year Psychology student Nabeelah Omarjee said: “I think it’s great that DMU take on board student feedback to make sure we get what we need.
“I want to spend this money on a public speaking course because I think it will really help me when attending interviews.”
The Employability Award - available for eligible students - is just one of the improvements made to the student experience this year as part of #loveDMU, which aims to ensure students have the best time possible at DMU.
Other improvements include: the opening of the library 24/7 and 365 days of the year, opening hours for the Vijay Patel Building and Gateway House being extended for all students to include weekends, £615k for #DMUglobal bursaries for international experience, up to £1m additional investment in DMUsport, and a further £500,000 spent on reducing unavoidable and unique costs in those programme areas where they were greatest. Other initiatives already in place to help DMU students to maximise their career opportunities include Frontrunners internships, a Unitemps job agency on campus, an employability mentoring scheme and an online portal for career planning and job hunting. We also offer the chance to apply for an additional DMU Employability Travel Bursary.
