DMU media graduate wins filming contract with Leicester Comedy Festival

A videographer who graduated from De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has won a contract to produce official footage of this year’s Leicester Comedy Festival for the second time.

Duncan Macleod, co-founder of Crosscut Media, will be responsible – with his business partner Dan Flanders – for capturing a series of comic performances throughout the festival, which begins on February 8.


The firm won the contract after impressing the Leicester-based Big Difference Company, which organises and runs the festival, headed up by DMU graduate Geoff Rowe.

Duncan – who graduated from DMU in 2012 with a BSc in Media Production – said it was the biggest contract Crosscut Media had yet taken on.


He said: “Last year we created all of their social media video content throughout the festival and worked with loads of comedians. This year the festival is bigger than ever, and so we’re aiming to really ramp up the social media engagement across all of the channels.

“There’s hundreds of acts and events taking place so we’re picking a selection of the main events and it’ll be up to us to go along, film the action and then edit that into a professional video which can be uploaded.

“We pride ourselves on our quick high-quality turnaround and for many of these we will be getting stuff online by the next day, which will be a real challenge.”

Duncan and Dan will not be entirely alone for the work: Crosscut, which is based in DMU’s Innovation Centre, has taken on a couple of Graduate Champions – Calum Lawrence and Annie Howell - under DMU’s scheme which gives fresh graduates the chance to take up a paid, six-week internship with a leading company.


Duncan said: “They’ll be helping us leading up to and including the festival, capturing the festival atmosphere around the city as well as interviewing comedians.”

Along with film production, Crosscut Media will also be responsible for the comedy festival’s official social media accounts, creating original content for its Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat pages.

Prior to this, Crosscut Media has worked with Argos, IBM, Loros, ArtReach, Eazi-Apps, Corrigo Design, RAFA, the RAF’s fundraising charity and Yomp, a digital marketing firm set up by BBC’s The Apprentice finalist Richard Woods.
