Kelly McCormack, who graduated with a BSc in Psychology from DMU in 2009, began volunteering around campus in her third year of study.  Her work on campus as an online welfare advisor and events support volunteer has inspired a passion for supporting community initiatives since graduating.

Discussing her time at DMU, Kelly had this to say: “I had an incredible experience at DMU and I really value the opportunities it provided me with.  I fell in love with the campus and the city during my time in Leicester which encouraged me to come back to live here.  I really enjoy walking around the campus now and seeing how much its changed since I graduated.”

Although she studied Psychology, she has since focused on supporting arts related activities around the city alongside her job at the University of Leicester.  Speaking about her decision to volunteer, Kelly said: “I’ve always had a passion to help others and volunteering is a fantastic way to gain new skills and try unfamiliar roles.  It’s definitely helped me in my career and I’d recommend trying new things to any graduate. I didn’t get involved with creative arts until I was 25, it’s never too late.”

Working on events from the Oxjam Music Festival to the Leicester Comedy Festival, Kelly has fulfilled roles such as runner, event assistant and manager.   Abseiling down the side of Coventry Cathedral on behalf of Loros and the successful organisation of the Leicester short film festival are just two of the highlights she found particularly memorable.

Kelly’s dedication to charitable work led to her being highly commended at the annual East Midlands Charity Awards in the category of Volunteer of the Year.  She has since won the award for 'Outstanding Woman in Art, Music and Media' at the East Midlands Womens Awards, on Friday 11 October.
