Creating positive change across Leicester
#DMUlocal demonstrates De Montfort University Leicester’s (DMU) commitment to the public good by using the knowledge and skills of students and staff to work with communities across Leicester.
Born out of the award-winning DMU Square Mile project, #DMUlocal works alongside key strategic partners such as Leicester City Council, Leicestershire Police and local NHS Commissioning Groups to create projects that improve education, enhance health and wellbeing and support regeneration.
These aims are achieved using the expertise and enthusiasm of hundreds of DMU staff and student volunteers, who travel across the city to take part in more than 125 projects and activities each year.
This amounts to more than 22,000 volunteering hours a year and over 2,700 volunteering opportunities.
The impact of this work includes helping thousands of schoolchildren to improve their maths and reading, raising aspirations and discovering new passions.
This is evidenced in our after-school clubs, where students teaching subjects such as coding has allowed more than 1,500 children discover computer science in a brand new way.
Specialist health projects are helping to raise awareness of conditions such as diabetes and dementia, while at the same time encouraging everyone to lead a healthier lifestyle.
Finally student volunteers are tirelessly working to support our communities, for example creating arts sessions and youth clubs in some of the city’s most deprived areas.
A gift today of £500 will enable a group of students to deliver an innovative project for the local community.
Thank you for your support.
