The Governance Effectiveness Review
De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) welcomes the publication of the independent Effectiveness Review authored by AdvanceHE, a thorough examination of the university’s governance structure and processes.
This is an important step in the process of continuing to deliver changes to DMU’s governance procedures, begun last year.
DMU welcomes in particular the report’s suggestions that it is “already well advanced in addressing the underlying issues that led to the regulator’s intervention” and that “external stakeholders, staff and students should be assured both by the diligence and effort being employed, and the progress being made.”
However, we, governors and executive, recognise that the process is not yet complete and this report, which DMU committed to commission and publish in its Action Plan of July last year, gives further impetus to that process. The Action Plan, made in response to the Office for Students report, also committed DMU to commissioning a further Governance Effectiveness Review to monitor continued progress, in 2021.
The Board of Governors will now carefully consider this report and its fifteen recommendations and outline its response in due course.
We feel that the report is a positive affirmation of the work DMU has done to date. As the authors state: “DMU has and continues to make a major difference to the life opportunities of thousands of learners. The institution’s contribution to civic society, research and industry is a vital feature of higher education provision in the East Midlands and beyond.”
