Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor/Dean of Health and Life Sciences
Kaushika is the Interim Dean for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at De Montfort University (DMU), and has been in academia since 2007.
Prior to entering academia she practiced and managed as a qualified social worker working with young offenders, children in care and child protection in Leicester.
Kaushika practiced for 17 years before moving to academia and during that time she co-chaired the Black Workers group for Leicestershire County Council for two years.
Kaushika joined academia as a lecturer, and in 12 years at DMU she has undertaken every academic role imaginable which places her in a very strong position to fully appreciate the challenges academics experience in their day-to-day work, when looking for progression, and challenging discrimination.
Kaushika’s experience in HE and the public sector allows her to bring a personal insight and professional perspective in the importance of understanding how to build resilience and emotional intelligence and understand organisational systems and networks.
Kaushika’s approach is to ensure inclusivity in engagement, to ensure that all voices are heard and she is especially conscious of ensuring that she supports and enables the quieter voices to be heard and have their space.
In addition to being Interim Dean, Kaushika is also the lead on a number of equalities-related projects at DMU. She is the project director of DMU’s attainment gap project, is deputy chair of the university Race Equality Charter Committee, deputy chair of the University EDI committee, as well as the chair for her own Faculty EDI committee.
Kaushika also formally mentors and coaches BME staff at DMU. As an academic Kaushika is keen to support BME staff to have a voice within their university - and the wider HE sector - and to have the opportunity to present their thoughts, ideas and solutions to effect change to make HE a more welcoming and inclusive environment to work in, where your identity is welcomed, valued and supported.
