James Gardner

Pro Vice-Chancellor for Strategic and International Partnerships and Associate Chief Operating Officer

James Gardner is a Pro Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for global engagement and a member of the Vice-Chancellor’s Executive Board. He joined De Montfort University in March 2011.

James is responsible for the development and implementation of DMU’s international strategy, global partnerships and all EU and international recruitment activity.

Within his wider role, James leads the Strategic Partnerships Directorate, which includes Strategic Partnerships, Events, Advancement, Sport, Music and the award-winning Square Mile programme, for which he is Project Director.

He is Senior Responsible Officer (SRO) for #DMUglobal, DMU’s flagship international experience programme.

In September 2018, James was appointed Associate Chief Operating Officer. In this role he provides leadership and support to the strategic development of the professional services and also assists in the planning and delivery of core student operations.

James read for a degree in English at the University of Leicester and began his career in higher education working at the same university.

On a personal level, James is a keen Leicester Tigers fan and has a variety of interests including reading (mainly political biographies), regular trips to the theatre and travelling.
