External quality requirements
As with all higher education institutions, De Montfort University (DMU) is required to adhere to external quality management requirements in accordance with directives from various overarching bodies, as appropriate. Additionally, the university adheres to external reporting requirements, including statutory returns and student surveys.
The Department of Academic Quality (DAQ) is responsible for ensuring adherence to many of these external requirements, supporting relationships with external bodies, and for keeping the university informed of national developments in quality management.

Quality Assurance Agency (QAA)
Monitoring of the university's higher education (HE) provision is entrusted to the QAA. The QAA checks how well institutions meet their responsibilities, identifying good practice, and making recommendations for improvement. This is achieved through conducting institutional reviews and by monitoring adherence to the UK Quality Code for Higher Education. Please contact Emma Sheffield with queries relating to the QAA.
Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted)
For our further education (FE) provision however, the university is subject to inspection by Ofsted under its Inspection Framework for Further Education and Skills. This currently relates to one DMU programme: the EdExcel BTEC level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. For further details regarding Ofsted, please contact Sally Lloyd or Rebecca Thirlby.
Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies (PSRBs)
DMU also manages relationships with a number of PSRBs who accredit and inspect some areas of provision. DAQ maintains the central record of PSRB relationships – contact Abid Hussain for more information.
Pearson (previously EdExcel)
Additionally, our Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes are delivered and awarded under the Pearson license agreement. This allows DMU as an awarding body to customise and devise our own higher-level programmes under the license. For Pearson related queries, contact Louise Newell.
Other external reference points
There are also several external reference points which inform our taught programmes academic regulations. These assist in setting and maintaining academic standards, and guide on the use of credit in the design of programmes leading to qualifications. Please contact Sally Lloyd for additional information.
Strategic Planning Services (SPS) are responsible for most of the university's statutory returns including Unistats and annual student surveys (not all of which are compulsory). These external surveys and returns are national initiatives conducted annually across most HE and FE institutions.
