Access to learning materials

Information technology is an increasingly important element in supporting learning and contact between staff and students. The email system enables tutors and students to book appointments, arrange meetings and exchange work.

The main electronic system for accessing information and materials associated with learning is the university virtual learning environment, called Blackboard. This can be used on and off campus, from any computer attached to the internet.

Each student's myDMU account directs them to the area of Blackboard's virtual learning environment that applies to the modules they are currently studying. 

Blackboard contains learning materials, reading lists, lecture notes and a wide range of other resources such as blogging and wiki software.

Tutors can set up discussion and communications areas among groups.

Databases to support learning range from the library catalogue, OPAC, to others running at the university and access to major data sets stored nationally and internationally.
