#DMUglobal in New York 2017

1,000 DMU students in New York

'Trip of a lifetime' as students take a bite of the Big Apple, undertaking a huge New York adventure in our biggest #DMUglobal experience to date.

#DMUglobal in New York

More than 1,000 students and staff from De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) started 2017 in New York City as part of our biggest-ever #DMUglobal visit.

The visit encompassed students on many different courses, offering each a tailored experience which truly illuminated the topics and skills they had covered in the classroom. Fashion students went behind the scenes at the world's premier lingerie designers, Victoria's Secret, while Media Production students visited NBC.

Journalism students saw the latest edition of the New York Times being put together and printed ahead of the hundreds of thousands of daily readers while Engineering students were taken beneath Grand Central Station to see the latest work on the massive East Side Access project - a huge expansion of the city's subway system.

Hundreds of other students got similar behind the scenes access simply unavailable to tourists.

Alongside this they experienced the city itself, enjoyed the iconic sights, cultural experiences and sense of freedom and adventure at the heart of great learning. They also got to meet bestselling author Lee Child, who talked about his writing and gave them an exclusive screening of the new Jack Reacher film, Never Go Back.

Students from across the globe took part in this very special #DMUglobal visit, which forms part of our #loveinternational campaign to demonstrate that openness and tolerance are crucial values in our society, especially in the wake of the EU Referendum and the US Presidential Election.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard chose New York because the city represents resilience, acceptance and above all an open and global outlook – principles at the heart of DMU’s international strategy.

He said: “This is the university’s largest-ever #DMUglobal visit, with more than 1,000 students from 46 nations travelling with us and demonstrating that we are all citizens of the world.

“This trip will help enhance our students’ global outlook, develop skills valued by employers and enrich their academic studies.”

At DMU we are truly citizens of the world, with 2,700 international students, expert academics from around the world and global collaborations with partner institutions and organisations.

Students from 46 nationalities travelled together on this trip, showing the power of global travel and international culture to inspire.
