Footballing student faces injury scare ahead of World Cup dream

A Journalism student from De Montfort University (DMU) is hoping she will recover in time from a fractured foot to fulfil a dream of playing for her national team in World Cup qualifying matches over the next week.

Liv Messum flew home to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) to join its women’s football team for a training camp ahead of its first ever senior World Cup matches.

The BVI squad is set to fly out this week to compete in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers in Honduras, playing Cuba on Saturday, followed by the hosts on Tuesday.

Liv, 21, said: “I was devastated to find out I could potentially miss out on the fixtures because of my injured foot.

“It has always been my dream to play in the Women’s World Cup for my country and one day I hope to lift the trophy.”

Liv picked up the injury in December while training with the DMU women’s football team.

She accidentally slipped on the wet turf and twisted her ankle. Scans showed it was fractured in two places and doctors estimated that she would be out for at least ten weeks.

She said: “I wasn’t going to let a small foot injury hold me back so I was determined to make a fast comeback.”

Her cast was taken off in early February which meant that she could start her rehab and slowly begin physiotherapy sessions.

The second-year Journalism student aims to regain match fitness and could be in contention for the away game against Honduras.

And, amazingly, she is not the only DMU student who has been named in the squad. Also in the BVI women’s team is fellow DMU student and university team-mate Alicia King.
