Students at De Montfort University’s new campus in Dubai have been given the opportunity to see the world’s best innovation at Expo 2020.

All 180 of those studying at DMU Dubai were taken to the huge event taking place only miles down the road from where they study.

They were given a tour by the UK Government’s Department of International Trade, which runs the UK Pavilion at Expo 2020.

Following an introduction from Dr Manjeet Ridon, Provost at DMU Dubai, the students were taken around many of the pavilions at Expo, including those run by India, China and the UAE.

Dr Ridon said: “With DMU having such a prominent role at Expo 2020, we were excited not only to be able to show our students what we were exhibiting as a university and but also inspire them with the sheer range of ideas on show at Expo.

“The research and innovation we are showing directly informs our teaching at DMU so by visiting Expo, students are able to see exactly how our work is having real impact on global industries.

“It will, I hope, inspire them in their learning at DMU Dubai.”

DMU is a founding partner of the UK Pavilion at Expo 2020, which runs until March 2022.

Across the six months of the Expo, which started in October, the University is showing a wide range of its research, engaging in debates and putting on events to connect with organisations across the globe.

The Expo is focused on improving sustainability throughout the world and last month DMU showcased  its research in creating a more eco-friendly fashion industry, with an exhibition of its pioneering textile creation techniques and a catwalk of sustainable fashion designed by students.

Next month the University will officially launch DMU Dubai with an event on its campus, located in Dubai International Academic City.

The purpose-built campus has multiple classrooms, a 700-seater auditorium, library, IT, robotics, mechanical and electrical, and psychology labs, along with architecture, fashion and design studios.

It offers students a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses including Mechanical Engineering, Cyber Security, Interior Design, Architecture, Fashion Communication and Styling, Psychology, Business and Management, and Accounting and Finance.
