De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has launched a brand new office in Portugal to facilitate recruitment of students from across Europe.
The Lisbon-based office, opened on Saturday 23 June, is the result of a unique partnership between DMU and Oxford International Education Group, one of the UK’s leading education companies.
The move reaffirms the university’s unshakeable commitment to its European connections by seeking to increase the numbers of European undergraduate and postgraduate students it welcomes onto its programmes of study.
The new office further contributes to the ongoing successful delivery of the university’s ground-breaking Global Instinct international strategy, which places a strong emphasis on developing partnerships and expanding DMU’s global footprint.
James Gardner, DMU’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Strategic and International Partnerships, opened the office together with David Brown, Group President and Co-Founder of Oxford International, at a ceremony attended by one of DMU’s largest agents, Information Planet. Afterwards, James Gardner hosted a special event in central Lisbon which saw potential future DMU students come together to hear James, David, a DMU alumnus and pathway student speak about the great opportunities and benefits of studying at De Montfort University.
James Gardner said: “It’s great to be working with Oxford International on this collaboration, which marks a huge step forward in DMU’s international strategy. This is the only example of any British university working with a third party to recruit students from Europe in this way. We believe this is a trailblazing initiative and will become the model that most of the sector adopts.”
“Having a permanent base in Lisbon will allow DMU to work more effectively in Europe and to maximise our recruitment footprint.”
In stark contrast to the overall fall in applications from EU students to UK universities amid uncertainty surrounding Brexit, DMU saw a 44% increase in enrolments from EU countries at the start of the current academic year.
James Gardner added: “We are investing in Europe and bolstering our presence on the continent. We are a global university and want to build on our success of recruiting European students.”
Oxford International has a 27-year track record of recruiting international students and already has a long history of collaborating with DMU, including on the creation of Leicester International Pathway College in 2013, which offers integrated programmes for non-UK students.
David Brown said: “This ground-breaking new partnership builds on the highly successful Pathway College collaboration between Oxford International and De Montfort University, and underlines the commitment that both our organisations have to embracing a united Europe.
“DMU is a very highly regarded university with a growing reputation for academic excellence and we look forward to combining those attributes with Oxford International’s recruitment expertise in the region, developed over the past 25 years.”
