We are committed to sustainability, from the work of our Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development to reduce the carbon footprint of businesses and people, to our status as a Fairtrade university.
We are currently ranked 16th of 145 universities in People and Planet's green league, and have been recognised by Universities That Count as having outstanding waste reduction and recycling. We were the first university to calculate our procurement (scope three) carbon emissions, and were asked by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to provide a framework for all universities to measure and report their emissions.
We work in partnership with many local and national organisations, and social responsibility is the watchword for everything we do. We aim to educate our students in how to be responsible and sustainable citizens.
We do this through bespoke programmes, specific modules which focus on greening business, or resource efficient design, through student competitions such as the Degrees Cooler initiative, or via the university's green travel plan.
