Equality and diversity
We have a genuine commitment to equality and diversity for staff and students and we aim to employ a representative workforce.
We consider applications solely on the basis of merit – regardless of age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, marital status, pregnancy and maternity. We regularly audit our buildings to ensure accessibility for staff and visitors with disabilities.
We are committed to making De Montfort University (DMU) a place where all staff and applicants can feel confident that they are valued and have a variety of career opportunities.

Disability Two Ticks
At DMU we are committed to employing and developing the abilities of disabled staff and we have been awarded the Disability Two Ticks mark to acknowledge that commitment.
Employers who are awarded, and use, this disability symbol make five commitments regarding recruitment, training, retention, consultation and disability awareness.
For more information on the meetings of our Disabled Staff Group, please visit their staff involvement group page.
DMU is an Athena Swan Bronze Award holder.
In 2018 we successfully renewed our Bronze institutional Athena SWAN award. The prestigious award, given by Advance HE, recognises DMU's work to advance gender equality. The rigorous process requires a full assessment of the staff lifecycle across all faculties through a gender equality lens, looking at areas such as representation, progression, career journey and the working environment.
There is just one criterion for joining Stonewall's Diversity Champions programme: a clear commitment to improving the working environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) staff.
DMU has joined this programme and our commitment to equality has been confirmed by Stonewall – in the Stonewall Top 100 Employers list for 2019, DMU rose 30 places to number 31, our highest-ever position in the rankings.
We are committed to ensuring that we have a culture in which all of our people are valued regardless of sexual orientation. Working with Stonewall will significantly help us to work towards achieving this goal.
