'Character' has been a perennial issue for humankind and in some ways, partly due to its longevity, may seem like a rather old-fashioned concept. Nevertheless, in the contemporary context(s), it is timely to centre stage a deeper investigation into the nature and operation of ‘character’ in organizations, institutions, society and public life. At a basic level of analysis and as a starting point it might be suggested that character can be considered through lenses of, what might be termed as ‘good’ and ‘bad’ character. However, the present discussion considers that there is scope to widen the debate(s) while operating within a wide range of domains and tropes. Therein, the rediscovery and reinvention of the character, and what meanings are possible, for the individual and in public life in the 21st Century can take place.
The inaugural lecture will present and explore these issues by way of an invitation and provocation to vital and much-needed debate on the pressing topic of character. We may even achieve some answers together…
The evening will begin with refreshments from 5:30pm, with the talk beginning at 6.00pm. A drinks reception and canapés will be available following the lecture.
