Personal profile

Ruth studied engineering at Dublin Institute of Technology, specialising in building services engineering and graduating in 1999 with first class honours. She worked as a consulting engineer for AMEC (now Morgan Sindall) until 2002 on a range of large projects including pharmaceutical facilities and sports centres. She developed her growing interest in daylighting whilst working for Max Fordham LLP from 2002-2005. In 2005 she completed an MSc in Light & Lighting at the Bartlett School, UCL, and worked as a lighting design consultant for Atkins until 2011 on a variety of projects including railway stations and schools.

Now a part-time PhD student at IESD, Ruth began her current study in 2011, looking at the long-term user experience of electrochromic glazing. Electrochromic glass is one of a new generation of smart glazing materials. It can change tint dynamically in response to a small change in applied voltage, thus allowing building occupants to control sunlight and daylight ingress to their space whilst still maintaining the view through the window at all times. Electrochromic glass holds significant potential as a dynamic façade element that can reduce building energy consumption and enhance the wellbeing of occupants. In 2012, the windows of two faculty support offices in a DMU campus building were replaced with electrochromic windows, and this was followed by an 18-month period of mixed-methods data collection that included several aspects of the physical environment as well as the subjective experience of the room occupants.
