Personal profile

Muhammad Usman Mazhar is a full time research student working towards a PhD in strategic carbon management in the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD). Muhammad graduated from the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Islamabad, Pakistan with a Bachelor (B.E.) in Civil Engineering in 2008 and obtained a MSc. in Construction Management from Loughborough University, United Kingdom in 2009. Prior to the MSc, he worked as an Assistant Project Manager at a Government College University, Faisalabad, Pakistan in the Project Management Unit (PMU), managing building construction and refurbishment projects. His PhD research is focused on strategic carbon management within the UK Higher Education (HE) sector. The research aims to explore how the UK universities are responding to the challenge of climate change by implementing strategic carbon management as part of their strategic management process. The research will analyse the current state of strategic carbon management within the UK universities, explore the drivers for (including policies) and barriers to carbon management and understand the key features/elements to embed strategic carbon management at the whole organisation level. As a result, a best practice strategic carbon management framework will be developed for setting future guidelines and lessons to improve carbon management within higher education as well as the broader public sector.
