Janet Riley is a specialist in the quantitative assessment of groundwater resources and groundwater quality.
As a consultant in the water industry Janet has worked on a wide range of projects including regional groundwater models for water resource management, contaminated land and landfill risk assessments, environmental and climate change impact assessments and investigation of groundwater infiltration of sewers. She has also developed and delivered professional training courses in groundwater modelling software and risk assessment. Her academic research includes subsurface characterisation and modelling of transport of nonaqueous phase liquids in groundwater.
Janet is a Research Fellow in the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD) and is currently working on the POWER project (Political and sOcial awareness on Water EnviRonmental challenges), which seeks to develop and use a digital social platform to communicate water issues (including water conservation, flood risk, water reuse and quality) at different levels (political, professional and public) with the aim of stimulating engagement and action to tackle current and future water challenges. The DSP is being piloted in four demonstration cities (Leicester, Milton Keynes, Sabadell (Spain) and Jerusalem). In particular, Janet is working with Leicester City Council to communicate flood risk to citizens and achieve greater resilience and preparedness for flooding, as well as personal actions to better manage surface water and drainage.
