Fernanda Amaral is currently a Ph.D candidate at De Montfort University. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Amaral graduated with a Bachelors degree in Journalism and always had a strong interest in communication dynamics in conflict areas and also in media and identity.

Over the years the role of new media in this scenario also became a focus of interest, and Amaral current research focuses on the role of social networks in daily lives of the Rio de Janeiro's favelas residents.
