Cassie Brummitt is a Part-time Lecturer and Research Assistant at De Montfort University, part of the Cinema and Television History Institute (CATHI) within the Leicester Media School. She is currently working on the BA/Leverhulme-funded research project 'The silver screen and the town: Memories of cinema-going, community, and the revival of local cinema' alongside Dr. Stuart Hanson (DMU) and Prof. Helen Wood (University of Lancaster).
Cassie has taught on BA Film Studies modules 'Film and New Media', 'Disney', and 'Professional Practice: Film Festivals'.
Her academic research focuses on contemporary blockbuster franchising across British and American contexts. Her PhD thesis focused on the Harry Potter franchise and the role of media paratexts in shaping and developing the brand between 2011-17. As a result of her transmedial approach, Cassie looks at a wide variety of texts, experiences and extratextual materials, including but not limited to websites, theme parks, plays, promotional materials, exhibitions and adaptations.
In 2016, Cassie published ‘Pottermore: Transmedia Storytelling and Authorship in Harry Potter’ in peer-reviewed journal The Midwest Quarterly (2016), and has a co-authored piece (with Kieran Sellars) in the upcoming edited collection Queerbaiting and Fandom, edited by Joseph Brennan for University of Iowa Press (2019).
