Personal profile

After completing his BEng in mechanical engineering (Council for National Academic Awards) and his PhD in mechanical/civil engineering (University of Cambridge), Andy was appointed to a lectureship in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham in 1996. He progressed rapidly through the academic ranks to a personal Chair in Civil Engineering in 2004, and in 2006 was awarded a DSc from the University of Nottingham for his research into pavement and rail track engineering. He has been an investigator on research grants and contracts worth in excess of £15 million, has published more than 180 journal and conference papers and is a member of many editorial boards and technical committees.

While at Nottingham, Andy held a number of managerial roles within the Faculty of Engineering, including Head of the Department/School of Civil Engineering, Associate Dean for External Relations and Internationalisation and Associate Dean for Infrastructure and Information Services.

Andy has been involved in many external activities. In 2008 he chaired a panel on technology for the built environment for an international research assessment exercise undertaken at The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden and in 2011 he was appointed a member of the Science and Technology Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Urban and Rural Construction and Transport.

Andy has commercial experience, principally through links with Scott Wilson, was director of a joint venture with the University of Nottingham and Scott Wilson Pavement Engineering Ltd.

On a personal level, Andy enjoys equestrian activities, including eventing and show jumping, a passion that he shares with his wife and one of his two children. He also likes to keep fit through swimming and aerobic sessions at the gym.
