Personal profile

Mary Tyler is a qualified and experienced youth worker and social worker who practiced in a variety of urban and rural settings including a social work team, secondary school, youth crime diversion projects, and youth centres. She was a Senior Youth Work Adviser at the National Youth Bureau before working in higher education, initially at the Open University before joining De Montfort University.

Mary headed up the Youth and Community Division for several years and has been a programme leader for much of her DMU career. She has been involved previously at national level with the Secretariat of TAG - The Association of Lecturers in Youth and Community Work Education including representing Universities which deliver youth and community work courses on the national professional body for youth work.

She teaches youth and community work undergraduate students in Leicester and postgraduates UK wide by distance learning, focusing especially on management and leadership. She is regularly engaged with research, reviews and evaluation at local, regional and national level largely about youth work and related practice with young people and communities and the management of this work.

Member of the National Youth Agency’s Education & Training Sub-Committee, as one of two representatives of Universities providing professionally validated youth work training.

Representing the Association of Community & Youth Work Lecturers (Training Agencies Group 1997 -2007) In this capacity acted as Chair of various professional validation panels and monitoring groups for Youth and Community Work courses at various Universities.

Responsible for the DFES funded evaluation of the national Transforming Youth Work Management Programme 2003-2004.
