Personal profile

Senior Lecturer in Law teaching Criminal Law and Gender and the Law. Melanie's main areas of interest/research are discrimination, equality and diversity, Critical Race Theory, Critical/Radical Pedagogies. Melanie is currently seconded 0.5FTE to Decolonising DMU and leads the staff work stream.

Melanie completed a PhD on Discrimination Law in Higher Education, focusing on Critical Race Theory and compliance with the Public Sector Equality Duties. Researching the impact of the formal equality stance on policy, processes & the experiences of  racialised minorities and disabled staff and students in HE.  She was also PI for a HEFCE funded project looking at policies, procedures and support for victims and survivors of sexual violence & harassment on campus. She is currently a Co-PI for research evaluating Leicestershire's DVSV services, 'Hope Project' and evaluating the provision of foster care for Unaccompanied Asylum Seeker Children in the East Midlands. 

Melanie was invited to run a workshop looking at institutional discrimination in Higher Education at the University of Lincoln and also delivered the keynote address at the London School of Business and Management Learning & Teaching Conference in 2018. She took part in a symposium on Gendered Experiences of Research at the University of Chester and has chaired the Government Events conference on 'The Future of Equality, Diversity And Inclusion In The Workplace 2019'.

Melanie is also the Chair and Board member of Northamptonshire Rights and Equality Council and is a member of the Sexual Violence and Domestic Violence Research Network at DMU.  Melanie has been a member of the Athena SWAN panel, judging applications for the Equality Challenge Unit/Advance HE.  Melanie is also a consultant equality and diversity trainer for the Football Association, training their County Disciplinary Commission members and Chairs, National Disciplinary Commission Panel members and Chairs.
