Personal profile

I am an artist and curator who lives and works between Leicester and Rome. Over the past years, I have worked with imagery of leisurely and classical heritage, primarily in the production of paintings but also objects such as wallpaper, ceramics, and tailored clothing. The notion of 'historical androgyny' — the idea that an artwork can contain the essence of various eras at once — was central to 'Orlando', the solo show I presented in Los Angeles in 2015, which was inspired by Virginia Woolf's eponymous novel.

Together with the writer Rosanna McLaughlin, I have curated the group show 'Congratulations on your Ugly Handwriting' at CURA. Basement, Rome. We are currently working on a new curatorial project called 'Affairs' which will explore the long and fruitful relationship between painting and ekphrastic writing. Through a series of exhibitions, commissioned writings, and seminars, this project will seek to foster the creative affairs between the two disciplines, celebrating the union by bringing together cross-generational artists and writers working in the present day, and reviving the tradition of ekphrastic writing.

Prior to teaching at De Montfort University, I taught at Cornell University in Rome, and was the visual art residency and programme curator at the British School at Rome.
