Foundation courses at DMU
Our foundation programmes are for applicants who are not eligible for direct entry to an undergraduate course. A foundation year enables you to gain the subject-specific knowledge and skills required to move onto degree-level studies.
Our selection of foundation courses, delivered in collaboration with a range of partner colleges, are listed below:
Art and Design (Foundation Studies) BTEC Diploma
The Art and Design Foundation course prepares you for progression to a huge variety of specialist art and design degree courses. You will have the opportunity to specialise in pathways like fine art, visual communication, 3D design, fashion and textiles and lens-based and digital media.
Engineering Year Zero
This full-time, one year course is ideal if you want to become a professional engineer, but do not have the relevant subject grades to study engineering at degree level. This course gives you the core skills in science, mathematics, design and IT, required to study engineering or physics at undergraduate level.
Footwear Foundation Degree
Offering the expertise in footwear technology required by the footwear industry worldwide, this course includes training supported by the UK footwear industry. This is in conjunction with specific requirements in design, shoemaking, range building, supply chain management, quality control, footwear business studies and production.
Forensic Road Collision Investigation
This programme is designed for those who wish to become forensic road collision investigators or for those already working in the industry, to develop and enhance their professional skills. This includes serving police officers, insurance investigators and those who offer consultancy expertise in this area.
Foundation Year in Computing
This full-time, one-year foundation course provides an introduction to computing and information technology and gives students without the necessary qualifications the skills required to study an undergraduate computing course. The course introduces a wide range of IT, communication and study skills that will prepare you for a degree in computing, enabling you to progress onto more advanced study.
Graphic Design and e-Media Foundation Degree
The Foundation Degree in Graphic Design and e-Media is designed to equip students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and creative understanding required to succeed within the graphic design and emerging media sectors of the 21st century.
The foundation year offers students an introduction to the production and critique of Media, Film and Journalism content. You will be encouraged to develop your creative and technical skills across a number of disciplines relative to the creative sector. These include video and audio production, digital photography, media research and the creation of news packages for conventional broadcast and online environments.
Pharmacy MPharm Year Zero
This full-time, one year course is ideal if you want to become a pharmacist, but do not have the relevant grades to study pharmacy at degree level. You will be taught the core skills in chemistry, biology, mathematics, IT and communication, providing you with key requirements needed to study Pharmacy MPharm (Hons) at DMU.
Photography and Video Foundation Degree
This course gives you the opportunity to further develop and explore your abilities in photographic and video practice. Your skills will be developed through practical assignments that are linked to current industrial and commercial practice. You will also produce a portfolio of work that demonstrates your creativity in contemporary imaging technology.
Working with Communities and Young People
The Work with Communities and Young People Foundation Degree looks at vulnerable groups in the community and provides the opportunity to understand and develop the way we work with those groups. Graduates find rewarding employment in a range of settings including the youth workforce, hostels, education, youth justice and the voluntary sector.
