Jasvinder Sanghera CBE
Jasvinder Sanghera CBE was appointed an independent governor in November 2019 and chairs the Ethics Committee.
Jasvinder acted as a political advisor, subject matter expert and human rights campaigner, awarded CBE in 2013, amongst other highly recognised awards. She has founded, and led for 25 years, the award-winning charity Karma Nirvana, which supports the victims of honour-based abuse and forced marriage.
She is an author of two Sunday Times Top Ten Bestselling books, which bring awareness to the impact of honour-based abuse and forced marriage on both women and men.
Jasvinder’s commitment to human rights campaigning and lobbying for changes in the government’s policies has been recognised at DMU when she received an Honorary Doctorate of Law in 2018. This has also led to her involvement in the university’s Mandala Project, which is devoted to supporting the victims of sexual harassment, violence and coercive control.
Jasvinder brings to the role of a co-opted governor on the Ethics Committee a wealth of knowledge and expertise including advising government departments and leadership of networks, platforms and campaigns such as Girls not Brides and Because I’m a Girl.
