University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) is one of the largest teaching trusts in the UK with clinical care and services spread over 3 sites; Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield Hospital.

The Leicester Royal Infirmary is located close to Leicester city centre and provides the only A&E service to the city and surrounding district. It offers a range of services across the specialities of medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, surgery, paediatrics, oncology, critical care and orthopaedic trauma.  The regional Medicines Information Centre is also based on this site as well as a large aseptic unit which provides a full cytotoxic reconstitution service for all IV chemotherapy across UHL.

The Leicester General Hospital is situated approximately three miles east of Leicester city centre. It offers a range of inpatient, day case and outpatient services across the specialities of renal and urology, obstetrics and gynaecology, surgery and orthopaedics. The hospital is the regional centre for renal and urology services.

The Glenfield Hospital is situated about three miles north west of Leicester city centre.  It has a range of day case, inpatient and outpatient services within the speciality groupings of critical care, respiratory and cardiac services. The East Midlands regional adult and paediatric cardio-thoracic unit is based here and the hospital provides one of the largest ECMO (Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation) services in Europe for both children and adults. The hospital also has a specialist breast care centre.

The pharmacy department

The pharmacy team is spread across the Trust and consists of over 400 members of staff. We have pharmacy departments on each hospital site and satellite pharmacies to support specialist areas. The main departments use automated dispensing robots to improve safety and efficiency.

Our clinical pharmacy service provides specialist pharmacist support at ward level to ensure prescribing is safe, effective and economic, delivering medicines information and support to our patients.

The trust is currently implementing electronic prescribing.
