Physics attempts to describe how nature works using the language of mathematics. It is considered by many to be the most important of all the natural sciences, and its theories attempt to describe the behaviour of the smallest building blocks of matter, light, the universe, and everything in between.

Physics plays a key role in our understanding of the world around us and, as a result, physicists have strong links with mathematicians, chemists, astronomers, geologists and biochemists.

Entry criteria

2017 Entry Criteria

BSc Entry

  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Mathematics or equivalent, plus one of the following:
  • Normally 112 UCAS points from at least two A-levels or equivalent, including one of the following subjects: Mathematics or Physics at grade C or
  • Physics or Mathematics BTEC National Diploma/ Extended Diploma at DMM or
  • Pass in QAA accredited Access to HE course
    • Mathematics
    • Physics
  • If you are studying an alternative Access course that is related to Engineering, Mathematics or Physics please contact us for more details.
  • English and Mathematics GCSE required as a separate qualification as equivalency is not accepted within the Access qualification. We will normally require students to have had a break from full-time education before undertaking the Access course
  • International Baccalaureate: 26+ points with Mathematics or Physics at higher level
  • Engineering Year Zero: Pass

The course is taught through lectures, supporting tutorials and laboratory classes. Learning takes place through the research and the presentation of findings, report writing, individual and group assignments and practical work-based exercises.

The first year of study introduces the fundamental laws and principles of physics, including classical dynamics, electricity and magnetism, atomic and nuclear physics, relativity, quantum physics, thermal physics, waves, vibrations and modern optics. In the second and third years, you will further study the fundamental principles of physics along with practical, laboratory-based work.

You will also be able to choose from a number of applied physics module options, linked to faculty research and covering many fields in technology, engineering and computing. In your third year you will also undertake an individual project in a subject of your choice. 

 

Assessment is typically through exams, phase tests, laboratory exercises, reports and presentations, along with individual and group coursework. There is an emphasis on practical skills underpinned by theoretical understanding. You will normally attend around 12-16 hours of timetabled taught sessions each week, and are expected to undertake at least 24 further hours of directed independent study and assignments as required.

 

 

You can improve your CV, become highly employable and put the skills you learn on your course into practice by taking a work placement as part of your studies.

Technology's dedicated Placement Team provides support to all of our students looking to integrate a placement within their university career on both undergraduate degrees and postgraduate masters programmes. The placement unit will help you search for placement opportunities, create and refine your CV and interview approach, and offer any advice you need to find a great placement.

In the past, Technology students have worked for a range of organisations from small business through to multinational companies across the world including Microsoft, IBM, GlaxoSmithKline and PepsiCo International.

 

 

 

Placements can enhance your career prospects and give you the chance to use theory from the classroom in a real-world scenario before you have graduated.

Facilities and features

Physics Laboratory

We have state of the art laboratories to facilitate the study of classical mechanics, dynamics and and thermo-fluids. Other specialised areas include:

  • a large darkroom designed to accommodate the study of optics and waves
  • electrical and electronic experimental facilities for general electronics and assembly, digital electronics, power electronics, control systems and communications
  • a spacious radio frequency reverberation chamber and Faraday cage, for experimentation in electromagnetics
  • digital design suite, equipped with the latest 8 and 32-bit embedded microprocessor platforms

The newly refurbished computing laboratories in Gateway House provides 80 computer workstations (20 HP PCs running Windows/Linux and 60 Apple iMac computers running OS X and Windows). All laboratories have printing facilities, internet access, internal network access and digital projectors to aid in teaching.

Equipment and media loans

To ensure you can complete your projects to the highest possible level, we have a comprehensive range of portable equipment and materials available for loan. These include audio recorders, cameras and video cameras, lighting and reflectors, laptops, mixing desks, professional microphones, outside broadcasting equipment, tripods and various software packages. An index of equipment available to loan for each course is available from subject tutors.

DMU Racing

DMU Racing is a student team that speaks to the passion and creativity of the student body. Each year DMU Racing takes part in the Formula Student competition.

Run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Formula Student challenges universities from across the world to design, build and race a single seat racing car in one year. The cars are then judged on their speed, acceleration, handling and endurance, while the teams are tested on their design, costing and business presentation skills.
