Music facilities

Both undergraduate and postgraduate research and teaching are served by a professional-grade recording studio, stereo and surround composition studios, workstations. Facilities include the Courtyard Studio, Project Studio, Surround Studio, Foley Studio and Workstation Lab/Classroom. 

Creative Technology Studios

The  Creative Technology Studios  (CTS) in the Faculty of Technology provide extensive, professional-quality recording and ADR/Foley studios. Within the CTS, the Fused Media Lab (FML) provides researchers with 3D VR resources such as Vicon optical motion tracking, 3D displays, and haptic interfaces.

Performing Arts Centre for Excellence (PACE)

The PACE building is the home of a designated UK Centre for Excellence, providing exceptional performance facilities for dance, music, and drama.

PACE Studio 1 is the primary performance studio used by MTI. This 16m x 16m room was acoustically designed to provide an outstanding, spectrally-balanced venue for multi-channel diffusion concerts. The highly flexible room can serve as a white-wall space or a black-box space. Fully modular seating can be arranged as needed for specific performance, installation, or classroom needs. A Steinway Model-D grand piano, high-definition video projection and a full theatre lighting rig complement the extensive sound diffusion system.

PACE Studio 1a

Studio 1a provides an acoustically-isolated group rehearsal, recording and workshop space with carefully designed acoustic treatments and low-noise air conditioning.


Courtyard Studio

The Courtyard Studio is a professional grade, fully sound-isolated recording, mixing and composing environment, featuring large control room and live room spaces and a triple-isolated drum booth. Configured to support audiovisual production and advanced spatialisation, sound design and composition, it provides industry standard stereo and 5.1 monitoring as well as advanced 8.2 channel surround.

Project Studio

The Project Studio supports 8-channel recording from a live room, plus stereo monitoring. Students can develop their work using the given Macintosh workstation, or they can bring in their own laptop computers for finalising mixes on professional stereo monitoring in a sound-treated room. An 88 key Clavinova is available for practice and production work.

Foley Studio

mit-workshop The large workshop area is a highly flexible space for circuit bending, instrument creation, and sound sculpture or installation art development.

Phoenix Square Film and Digital Media Centre

DMU is a partner in Leicester's Phoenix Square Film and Digital Media Centre . The DMU Cube installation space is curated through the Institute of Creative Technologies and has been the site of audiovisual installations and events in association with the MTIRC. 

We have also hosted live electronic music performances in the Screen Lounge and Cafe. Our annual Visible Bits Audible Bytes audivisual screening and performance is held in one of Pheonix's full-scale digital projection cinemas. Phoenix Square was also the site of the 2012 M4_u Max/MSP Convention .
