Graphic Design (Interactive) BA (Hons)

Graphic Design (Interactive) BA (Hons) is a newly developed course that focuses on giving you cutting edge digital skills so that you can work creatively at the forefront of an evolving world of graphic communication. This programme focuses on engaging interactive content, user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design, motion graphics and animation, design for web and apps, visualisation of ideas, graphic literacy and problem solving.

You will work on a series of major personal projects to build your portfolio and professional skills, including undertaking live briefs from the design industry. 

This industry-focused course ensures you will experience what it takes to be a successful interactive graphic designer and graduate with a portfolio demonstrating your capabilities and talents. 

This course is designed for those with a specific interest in the cutting edge digital arts. Our well established Graphic Design courses focus more on traditional and core design skills such as editorial design, image making or advertising, whilst this programme focuses on pushing the conventions of digital applications and user experiences through a hands-on approach in communicating visual solutions and spaces to a wide audience.

Entry criteria

2017 Entry Criteria

  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English or equivalent, plus one of the following:
  • 104 UCAS Points including a grade C or above in Art and Design
  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English
  • BTEC requirements: Distinction Merit Merit (DMM) at National Diploma Level.
  • Additional qualifications can contribute towards the points score such as a third A-level or AS-levels
  • International Baccalaureate: 24+ points including Art and Design at higher level grade 5 or
  • Art and Design Foundation Diploma: Pass

Portfolio Required: Yes

Interview Required: No

We welcome applications from mature students with non-standard qualifications and recognise all other equivalent and international qualifications

English language – If English is not your first language we require an English language level of IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each component or equivalent

English Language tuition, delivered by our British Council accredited Centre for English Language Learning , is available both before and throughout the course if you need it.

Taught by practising designers in a vibrant studio culture, teaching takes place through workshops, seminars, team and individual tutorials, and interactive lectures from leading practitioners.

You can choose from a wide range of specialist topics in professional interactive graphic design. You will normally attend around 12-16 hours of timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) each week, and can expect to undertake at least 24 further hours of independent study to complete project work and research.

 

Facilities and features

Graphic Design Suite

We have excellent specialist facilities, including Mac-equipped computer suites, open access multi-purpose studios with excellent natural light, digital imaging equipment, dedicated drawing and visualisation studios and large photography and printmaking workshops. 

Campus Centre

The current home of De Montfort Students' Union (DSU), Campus Centre, has been completely refurbished to create a state-of-the-art environment for DSU improving the student experience.

The new-look Campus Centre is the hub for student life. On the ground floor, visitors can eat or drink at a café selling Starbucks coffee, at Subway or at Milly Lane’s, the campus’ newest eatery run by DSU, selling freshly handmade hot and cold food, coffee and smoothies.

Also on the ground floor is a Spar and Subway. There is also the DSU-owned charitable accommodation service Sulets and SUpplies, DSU’s shop, selling art supplies stationary  and clothing, and offering printing and binding services.

A newly-created staircase in the centre of the building leads up to the first floor, where the DSU officer team has new offices.

More than 93 per cent of recent Graphic Design BA (Hons) graduates were in work or further study within six months of graduating*.

They can be found working at some of today’s top design agencies and businesses including Google, Sony Playstation, Disney Studios, Landor Associaties, Yahoo, Adtrak, GlaxoSmithKline, Burberry, Next, Warner Music and Fontshop, Cite, Bulb Studios and more.

They work throughout the graphic communication sector as staff designers, consultants or freelancers, in areas such as information, advertising, promotional design, and interactive and multimedia design.

This course is designed to lead into global careers in UX (User Experience) Design, UI (User Interface) design, web design and development, app design, graphic design, animation and motion graphics.

We offer a range of high-standard accommodation for our students, with nine halls of residence – and around 2,300 rooms – all of which are within easy walking distance of the campus.
