Education Studies with Mandarin BA (Hons)

First year

  • Teaching and Learning in the Primary Sector - considers national perspectives on primary education and provides a critical insight into teaching and learning in contemporary primary classrooms
  • Children and Social Justice - introduces some of the most important current debates in childhood studies. You are encouraged to contest and interrogate common sense and commonly held ideas about children and childhood
  • Thinking and Learning in Higher Education- this module has been carefully designed to support you through your academic life by helping you to establish a good personal and academic ground on which to build your learning and development

Second year

Core module:

  • Researching Education - considers the current themes, debates, methods and ethical issues involved when carrying out educational research into children and young people’s lives

Plus select two modules from:

  • Philosophy of Education - critically examines the contributions of key philosophers to our understanding of education, ranging from classical thinkers such as Plato and Aristotle to contemporary ones including Paulo Freire and Richard Rorty
  • Global comparative education - encourages students to look beyond UK borders by examining education systems around the world, utilising comparative frameworks and considering global conceptualisations of education
  • Contemporary cultural perspectives - introduces students to a range of perspectives, theories and debates concerning contemporary cultural change and how this impacts on education and learning
  • Technological transformations in learning - enables students to examine in detail the key educational transformations that arise from the expansion of all forms of technology
  • Computer programming as a tool for learning
  • Music in the life of the primary school  - offers students basic, core practical skills in primary music education, supported by engagement with key contemporary debates regarding UK policy, practice, theory and research into children’s musical development
  • Teaching Diversity: Inclusive Education Internationally - rather than being a marginal theme on how some learners can be integrated into mainstream education, inclusive education is explored as transformation of the education system in response to the diversity of learners

  • Language module two

Third year

Core module:

  • Education Dissertation - an independent study on a topic of your choice, agreed with the subject team. It provides an opportunity for students to design and undertake a small-scale study and receive feedback from their tutor

Plus select two modules from:

  • Placement Project (strongly encouraged) - is an independent and individually negotiated project involving a placement in a school or other educational environment
  • Education and Equality: Class, Race and Ethnicity - examines current debates concerning social class, race and ethnicity, and social justice in education
  • Gender and Education - examines current debates concerning gender and education
  • Radical Educations - examines contemporary radical theories of education, particularly the arguments for ‘critical pedagogy’, and possible responses whilst studying contemporary examples of innovative education
  • Education and the Arts - will equip students with an understanding of arts education policy, pedagogy, curriculum design, and assessment in a time of educational, economic, technological and social change
  • Special Educational Needs in Education - explore how primary and secondary schools support children who have special educational needs (SEN)
