Helen Holden - Dance graduate
A 2008 graduate, Helen is Projects and Company Manager at London Contemporary Dance School. She manages EDge: the postgraduate performance company and LC3. She is responsible for their national and international tours as well as producing all the school performances in the Robin Howard Dance Theatre.
Helen also produced the recent evening for Bob Lockyer at The Place; a mixed bill of commissions from Rambert, Richard Alston, Siobhan Davies, Wayne McGregor and Dame Monica Mason.
Helen says that running the student-led Dance Forum at DMU helped her to realise that she really enjoyed curating, producing and managing dance events. The experience and skills helped her to secure posts such as Education Assistant at Chisenhale Dance Space, London as a recent graduate.
The key thing she learned from the course is ‘the more you put in, the more you get out of it’. This is an ethos she has kept ever since. It is about making opportunities happen. It’s about doing your research, finding out who key people are, having a proactive attitude and putting yourself out there.
This ethos has led Helen to work as part of Arts Council for the East’s new initiative, Escalator Dance Producers working with James Wilton Dance and the award winning company Lost Dog with the support of South East Dance and DepArts.
Helen will also be working with Sadhana Dance as their creative producer for their new work in 2013.
Helen says ‘feedback from my third year choreography tutor flagged up that I have a talent for bringing out the best in other people, and I see that now in what I currently do. I am interested in relationship building with artists and pursuing this within my current projects. I had no idea that this was an area of the dance sector that I could even do when I entered my first year at University.’
