Contemporary issues in the context of public health MSc/PG Dip

This module is a core module for both health visitors and school nurses undertaking the SCPHN programme. However it is available for nursing professionals wishing to gain a greater understanding of public health issues.

The aim of the module is to enable the student to critically examine the impact of contemporary issues on specialist community public health nursing and to further develop systematic skills in partnership working exploring various professional roles, gaining in depth knowledge necessary to promote and improve health for individuals, families and communities. The broad content of the module will include; 

  • Public Health; International, national and local 
  • Epidemiology; surveillance 
  • Screening methods; Lifestyles, health and wellbeing 
  • Communicable diseases 
  • Health needs assessment and community profiling 
  • Models and concepts of health promotion and Public health 
  • Identification of resources to improve health and well being 
  • Health inequalities 
  • Social policy and interpretation; skills to evaluate policy 
  • Understanding policy and national targets to improve health 
  • Social Capital/social marketing 

Entry criteria

  • Effective registration with appropriate professional statutory regulatory body
  • Ability to study to degree level (120 credits level 4/5)
  • Evidence of recent study
    (If accessing the module at level 7, 2:2 degree or above required)
