Politics of Nationalism

Module code: POPP3052

Module description

This module is designed to provide an advanced understanding of the politics of nationalism. In doing so the module provides both a theoretical perspective relating to nationalism as well as a broader understanding of the roots of nationalism. The module looks at a number of key issues relating to the development of nationalism, identifying particular thinkers and approaches, while also positioning the politics of nationalism in a contemporary context. It engages students with various themes and debates within nationalism, such as the role and purpose of national identity, the use of nationalism as a tool for popular mobilisation, the use of imagery and mythology to promote a sense of shared identities, and the causes of ethnically defined conflicts and their resolution.
