Advanced Criminal Law

Module code: LLBP 3016

Module description

The module provides an opportunity to study criminal law (interpreted in its widest sense to include criminal justice, criminal procedure, evidence and punishment and sentencing, as well as substantive criminal law) in greater depth than is possible in the core compulsory Criminal Law module. The module is conducted according to an inquiry-based learning approach. This means that students assume substantial responsibility for shaping the syllabus, class content and assessment in consultation with the module tutor. It follows that all of these elements will vary from year-to-year in response to the particular interests and curiosities of the current class.

All classes are highly interactive, and a significant degree of student participation and engagement is expected from the outset. The reason for this is that, alongside developing substantive knowledge, the learning and teaching style is designed to foster the development of a number of important transferable skills that support advanced level learning and prospective employability. These skills include legal and academic research abilities; reflective and autonomous learning; peer-to-peer learning; team working; oral and written presentation; and skills in multi-media presentation. Dedicated tuition in these skills is provided in the context of the module, according to the needs and requests of the current class.
