Disputes and conflict between individuals in the workplace can cost organisations in many ways. Apart from the risk of the financial costs involved in defending a claim to an employment tribunal, there are the costs in terms of lost production, lack of motivation, internal politics, and an increase in the level of discontent. This module identifies the causes of discontent and disputes within the workplace. It acknowledges that conflict between individuals is an inherent part of the world of work. The 2007 CIPD report (Managing Conflict at Work ) noted that the majority of disputes at work were caused by general behaviour (conduct), performance and sickness (capability), and relationships between colleagues. This module attempts to address these issues and offer critically aware comment on available and proposed mechanism for their resolution. It presents organisational examples, discussion of the legal framework, and patterns for the development of realistic resolution mechanisms.
