Gifted and Talented

The support of able, gifted and talented students has been on the government‘s agenda for some time.  Although the methods and funding may have changed over the last few years the key message remains the same:

‘Providing for gifted and talented learners in our schools is a matter of equity - as with all other pupils they have a right to an education that is suited to their needs and abilities, to allow them to fulfil their true potential’  - Government White Paper 2005 , Higher Standards, Better Schools for All

At DMU we recognise this need and the talents of the next generation.  We have developed a programme of free activity aimed at providing engaging, inspiring and challenging outreach activity which starts in Year 10 and completes in Year 12.

An example of a typical programme:
Year 10 - Four day Easter School - Non-residential - G&T Drawing School
Year 11  - One day/evening - Degree show exhibition + Q&A reception and reunion
Year 12 – One or two day - Taster Session

Teachers are asked to identify suitable students and invite them to apply via an application form.  The application form includes parental consent and a personal statement from the student detailing why they wish to attend.  It is the endorsement by the teacher , the confirmation of the students current subject of study and the personal statement that determines the success of their application.
