The first Hackathon for assisted living, health, social care and community was on the weekend of 16th and 17th November 2013 and was organised by Samad Ahmadi from the VirAL research group, Bill Wong from Mechatronics research group and Leicestershire County Council with sponsorshis from the Faculty of Technology of De Montfort University and DMu Square Mile project.
The event brought together developers and designers who worked with charities and service providers and created four techinical solutions two intensive days of discussions, design and development.
For this event there were 12 submissions recieved from different organisations, hospitals and charities. Based on feasibility and necessity considerations, 4 proposals were considered for development. These applications are as follows:
- Lone Care Worker Alert
- Resource sharing software for charities in Leicestershire
- Automation of Checking tasks performed through mobile devices

The Hackathon 2013 event was organised during a DMU open day event and included a parallel session of 'Programming with Raspberry PI', which was held for school children and open day visitors.
