This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no: 629051.

In many real world applications, there are situations where data is limited and incomplete, such as macroeconomics, climate change and R&D management of complex products. A well defined data mining method for small and incomplete data does not yet exist. The theory of Grey Systems provides such an alternative for data mining with small and incomplete data sets. Grey Systems have delivered great success in China but have not yet obtained significant attention in Europe. In this project, a set of criteria will be defined to help potential users to choose the right models for their applications. A new prediction and decision making model shall be proposed, so as to give more reliable results in complex situations. This project will greatly reinforce the research excellence of the European Union in data mining and decision support.

Professor Sifeng Liu (Incoming Fellow) from the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Prof. Yingjie Yang (Scientist in Charge) from De Montfort University, Leicester, aim to advance knowledge of Grey Systems Theory and its applications to data mining in Europe.

Objectives

  • To propose a set of criteria for grey model selection and calibration under different conditions.

  • To construct a new grey prediction model considering non-homogeneous exponential growth, multiple variables and fractional derivatives.

  • To establish a fractional-order grey target decision model with grey rewards, different significance of information sources and the impact of past rewards and future expectations.

  • To develop a case study for the proposed models in the area of R&D management of complex products.
