Achieving vertically-integrated carbon-fibre reinforcement design and manufacture demonstrators for structural manufacturing and construction 3D composites.
A De Montfort University Technology Strategy Board (TSB) funded project has investigated how carbon fibres can be designed and manufactured to offer end-user benefits over existing material solutions.
This seminar is an opportunity to hear the project findings and engage with the team in discussing potential uses of 3D woven composites in your market, and how they can be designed and manufactured to offer end-user benefit over existing material solutions.
Carbon Fibre Technologies Explained
Carbon Fibre Reinforced Preform (CFRP) sections are useful engineering materials with well known advantages. The ability to reinforce these preform sections in three dimensions, rather than laminating sections reinforced in two dimensions, has the potential to offer much greater engineering advantages over alternative structural components.
This is a new technology with limited prior knowledge and the TSB funded AVISC project in order to better understand the design, manufacture and mechanical properties of these 3D woven composites.
M Wright & Sons Ltd
M Wright & Sons Ltd is a family owned and run SME business with over 150 years of weaving experience in engineering textiles. The company invested in developing new products to cover a decline within the aerospace industry for next-generation aero-engines: having an established customer demand for bespoke 3D woven carbon fibre composite reinforcements for structural components.
The project has enabled M Wright & Sons Ltd to improve its competitive position by their design and production of a World Class 3D carbon-fibre weaving loom. The loom has enabled the improvement of strength-to-weight ratios for customers who need tailor-made products. Wright's now have the potential to double company turnover within five years.
