Course
MSc Climate Change and Sustainable Development

I had been working in energy and the built environment for some time and developed a real interest in renewable energy, sustainability and climate change. The IESD MSc programme stood out as really relevant to both my work and personal interests.

The IESD has a good reputation in energy, sustainable development education and offers variety and flexibility in the study programme. I was able to manage my study programme whilst still working full time. I gained a broad range of skills and knowledge relating to energy in buildings, climate change, greenhouse gas emissions assessment and a broader understanding of the challenges facing the built and natural environment and the theory of sustainable development.

I really enjoyed getting to grips with building physics as well as economic investment appraisal, understanding more about different low carbon and renewable energy systems and the international and national policy drivers and conflicts. These skills supported my work experience and I have found to be invaluable in my work now, as a Specialist Energy and Sustainability Consultant for one of the UKs leading independent Planning and Urban Design Consultancies.

My work now involves advising on the implementation of sustainability principles in the built environment, exploring opportunities and constraints often supporting major development and regeneration projects. I am also a director of Leicestershire’s first community energy co-operative Green Fox Community Energy.

I would certainly recommend the course to anybody interested in developing their knowledge in energy and sustainable development. The programmes offered are very relevant to many of the challenges facing industry now and in the future.
