Declan Alcock

Current Job: Senior Consulting Engineer with Varming Consulting Engineers and Director of Engineers without Borders (Ireland)

Course: MSc Energy & Sustainable Building Deign (Distance Learning)

I had been working in Industry for 10 years in the area of dynamic simulation modeling but did not have a formal qualification in this area having originally studied Mechanical Engineering. I had researched a number of courses before choosing IESD and the content of the course and quality of the staff convinced me this was the correct course for me.
The course content covered not only modules which were relevant to my job such as Ventilation & Airflow Modelling, but also areas I had an interest in outside of work such as Sustainable Development. In that respect it was the perfect fit for me. I didn’t really have the typical student experience as I studies by distance learning, however I found the lecturing staff to be very helpful and was made to feel part of University life. I liked the flexibility of studying through Blackboard as it allowed me to tailor my studying time to fit around my work commitments.

The course has given me greater confidence in my work and helped me to communicate my designs and proposals more effectively The credibility of having an MSc from a respected institution such as IESD has opened a lot of doors to me and provided opportunities which I may not otherwise have had. Since completing my study at DMU I have been working as Senior Sustainability Engineer with Varming Consulting Engineers in Dublin. I am also a Director of Engineers Without Borders Ireland where I am Head of Professional Networks. I am on the Engineers Ireland BIM Working Group and a member of the CITA (Construction IT Alliance) Skillnets Steering Committee and will shortly be lecturing the “BIM for Sustainable Construction” module of the MSc in Construction Informatics at Dublin Institute of Technology. I have also completed the “Certified European Passive House Designer” course with the Passive House Academy.

I would have no hesitation in recommending the MSc ESBD to others, it is very relevant to the AEC industry at a time of great change and provides the skills and knowledge to be at the forefront of the industry.
